Florida Tops U.S. Economy Rankings for Third Straight Year—Here’s Why It Matters
Florida has once again claimed the top spot as the best-performing economy in the United States, marking its third consecutive year at number one, according to a new CNBC report released Monday.
Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted the state’s continued economic dominance, citing Florida’s lean government model and pro-growth policies.
“Florida has the lowest number of state workers per capita, the lowest debt per capita, the second-lowest spending per capita, no income tax, the number one public higher education system, the lowest in-state tuition, universal school choice, law-and-order policies, and we’re number one for new business formations,” DeSantis said.
The CNBC study awarded Florida 363 out of 445 points, earning the state an A+ for economic performance. In 2024, Florida’s economy posted a $1.34 trillion GDP, achieved 1.4% job growth, maintained an AAA credit rating from Moody’s, and saw $185 billion in international goods trade, equivalent to 13.8% of its GDP.
The ranking evaluates each state’s ability to weather economic downturns. Florida stood out not only for its robust growth metrics and fiscal health but also for its leading role in new business creation and trade.
“Economic growth and job growth remain in the top ten. State finances are strong, and Florida is a leader in new business formations,” the CNBC report noted.
Though Florida is a key player in global trade, only a small portion involves China, giving it a relative advantage when it comes to tariffs. Still, the report cautioned that the Sunshine State depends on the federal government for about 34% of its budget, including two-thirds of its $34 billion Medicaid allocation—raising concerns among some Floridians about Washington’s policy shifts.
Coming in second place was Texas with 348 points, followed by North Carolina, Delaware, and New York rounding out the top five. Washington, Idaho, Utah, Georgia, and South Carolina followed.
Beyond economic strength, Florida also earned top marks for religious liberty. According to the First Liberty Institute’s “Religious Liberty in the States” Index, Florida now ranks #1 in the nation for legal protections related to faith.
The index measured 47 legal protections and 20 key safeguards reflecting how states support religious freedom. Florida rose from second place in 2024 to claim the top spot this year.
“Religious freedom is a cornerstone of our nation’s founding and essential to the American way of life,” said DeSantis. “I’m proud that Florida leads the nation in defending this fundamental right. As governor, I will always uphold and protect religious liberty.”
